Religious Recogitions

Religious recognitions are created by national religious organizations/committees to encourage the spiritual growth of their youth members and reinforce many of the values integral to Girl Scouting. While My Promise, My Faith helps girls connect Girl Scouting with their faith, the religious recognitions programs help girls grow stronger in and learn more specifically about their faith.

Each religious organization/committee develops and administers its own program. The To Serve God religious recognitions brochure shows the religious recognitions that have been created by various faith groups. You can find this brochure, a video that explains the religious recognitions programs, and other resources for collaborating with the faith community at P.R.A.Y. Publishing: http://www.praypub.org/partner_gsusa.htm.

Some religious organizations are not affiliated with P.R.A.Y. or may not have a national office; to learn about their religious recognitions, contact their local leaders.

God and Me - Baptist, Methodist, & Presbyterian

The P.R.A.Y. program

  • Is a religious emblems program created by the national church bodies cooperating with P.R.A.Y.  It is a CHURCH program, approved for use by the national youth agencies.
  • Includes awards/emblems that are approved for wear on the official uniforms of the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., Camp Fire USA, and American Heritage Girls.
  • Is used by members of Protestant and Independent Christian churches.

  • Is an interdenominational resource, which means that all denominations use the standard curriculum.  The curriculum allows each church to introduce the unique characteristics of their denomination.
  • Must be taught under the auspices of the church.  Students are required to present their work to the pastor for final approval.  This does not mean that the pastor is the only one who can serve as counselor or teach a class.  The pastor may appoint a parent, Sunday school teacher, or other lay leader in the church to serve as a P.R.A.Y. program counselor.  But it is the pastor who approves the final work.
  • Consists of four different programs based on grade level.  These grade levels roughly correspond to the different ranks in the scouting programs, but since the P.R.A.Y. program is a program of the church, it goes strictly by grade level (not by rank).

Girl Scouts of the Islamic Faith

Islamic Committee on Girl Scouting

Formed in Stamford, Connecticut in 1988, the Islamic Committee on Girl Scouting presents Girl Scouts of the Islamic Faith their Religious Recognition Awards. The committee has developed a program that includes a booklet of Islamic and Scouting activities and presents medals named:

  • BISMILLAH AWARD
  • IN THE NAME OF ALLAH AWARD
  • QURAT UL A'IN AWARD
  • MUSLIMEEN AWARD

The Girl Scouts of the United States of America (G.S.U.S.A.) works with many religious groups to bring such awards to girls from different spiritual backgrounds. The Religious Recognition Awards offered by the ICGS is approved by both the G.S.U.S.A. and by W.A.G.G.S. (World Association of Girl Guides and Scouts). Muslim girls all over the world, including the U.S.A., are working on these awards and are, Alhamdolillah, benefiting from the Islamic scouting experience.

The Religious Recognition Program for Girls of the Islamic Faith Includes:

  • The Ramadan Patch
  • Ramadan Goal Achiever
  • Share Ramadan with Friends
  • Hajj Patch
  • Jumma Patch
  • Sadaqah Patch

National Jewish Committee on Girl Scouting

The National Jewish Committee on Girl Scouting, Inc. is a non-profit organization which works in cooperation with Girl Scouts of the USA. Its functions are:

  • to promote the Jewish Girl Scout award programs and religious services in Girl Scout Councils
  • to assist Girl Scout Councils in extending Girl Scouting in the Jewish Community
  • to encourage cultural exchanges with the Israel Boy and Girl Scouts Federation.

The Jewish Awards for Girl Scouts are:

Lehavah Award for Girl Scouts in Grades 2 - 3

Bat Or Award for Girl Scouts in Grades 4 - 6

Menorah Award for Girl Scouts in Grades 7 - 9

Or Emunah Award for Girl Scouts in Grades 10 - 12

Additionally, the National Jewish Committee on Girl Scouting accepts nominations for the Ora Award. This award is a recognition presented to adults who have given outstanding service to Jewish girls in Girl Scouting or who have extended Girl Scouting in the Jewish Community.

Girls can also earn a Shabbat patch - The patch can be presented to any girl who attends a Girl Scout Shabbat Service, or Girl Scout Shabbat event, or who wears her Girl Scout uniform to services during Girl Scout Week. The girl must be identified as a Girl Scout by either being in uniform or wearing her Girl Scout pin.

You can find all resources for your girl scout to earn her Jewish Religious Recognition awards at the link below:
