Frequently Asked Questions

Holbrook Pack 607 FAQs

When can my child join Cub Scouts?

Any boy or girl in Kindergarten thru 5th grade may join our Cub Scout Pack at any time.

Can my daughter join your Pack?
Our Pack welcomes girls into our girl only dens. Girls do everything the boy only dens do, but they meet in their own dens.

When and how often do you meet?

Our dens meet on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. for den meetings and about every 6 weeks for Pack Nights. We also meet some Saturdays or Sundays for special events like our Pinewood Derby and for trips like nature hikes and visiting area attractions. We also have at least one, but usually 2 Family Campouts on a weekend at an area campground.

How much will it cost?

The annual Pack 607 registration and dues are $250 for each Cub Scout. This cost includes Annual BSA National Registration, local council membership fee, BSA insurance, a car kit for our annual Pinewood Derby for each scout, all advancement patches, beltloops & pins for each scout, and a yellow Pack 607 T-Shirt for each scout. Money from membership dues also helps cover supplies for the den and pack programs including for our annual Blue & Gold Banquet and for the End of Year Picnic and Campout. Our scouts participate in several fundraisers per year. The money raised from the fundraisers help cover the cost of den and pack activities and the various outings we have during the year for the scouts.

Additional costs include buying a uniform and additional programs outside of our pack program like Summer Camp.

Do we have to get the uniform?
The short answer is yes, your scout needs a uniform. The Boy Scouts of America has always been a uniformed body. Its uniforms help to create a sense of belonging. They symbolize character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. Wearing a uniform gives youth and adult members a sense of identification and commitment.
  • Personal equality - The uniform represents a democratic idea of equality, bringing people of different backgrounds together in the Scouting tradition.
  • Identification - The uniform identifies youth and adult members of the Boy Scouts of America, visible as a force for good in the community. When properly and smartly worn, the uniform can build good unit spirit.
  • Achievement - The uniform shows the wearer's activity, responsibility, and achievement. The accomplishments of every youth and adult member can be recognized by the insignia worn on the uniform.
  • Personal commitment - The uniform is a constant reminder to all members of their commitment to the ideals and purpose of the Scouting movement. It is a way of making visible members' commitment to a belief in God, loyalty to country, and helping others at all times.

What do I need to buy for the uniform?

Once you register your scout with our Pack, you will be given our uniform requirements brochure. In it will be a checklist of required uniform items. Our pack provides some parts of the scout's uniform, so be sure to see the lists inside the brochure.

When does my scout need to be in uniform?

Scouts should be in uniform at all scouting events. Please buy your scout's uniform as soon as you can. We ask that all Scouts have a uniform by the end of October when we will have our uniform inspection.

Where can I purchase a uniform?

New uniforms may purchase locally at the Medford Scout Shop or online at Scoutstuff.org. See the back of the uniform brochure for directions and other details. Used uniforms can be purchased online for example on eBay. Please be careful if you want to purchase a used uniform because lots of people use a glue called Badge Magic to adhere patches to the uniform shirts. This glue is very difficult to remove. If you have problems affording a uniform, please let us know.

What are my responsibilities as a Parent?

Cub Scouting is a family oriented program, thus Parent involvement is crucial to your child's success as a Scout.
Parents are expected to:
  • Help with projects
  • Attend Pack Meetings with their Scout
  • Attend Outings and Field Trips with their Scout
  • Be an active participant in the Pack (Committee)
  • Provide support for your son's Den and Pack

Can siblings attend?

We know it may be difficult to attend without "siblings in tow", therefore siblings are gladly welcomed! Remembering that the meetings are to help the scout learn and grow, siblings are welcome. Do not expect Den Leaders to babysit siblings, however. Den Leaders plan and prepare activities for the cub scouts present. Please bring a quiet activity to keep your other child or children happy, and we will do our best to include siblings in our activities when possible.

The same applies for field trips and outings. Some field trips may be very friendly towards younger siblings in tow, while others may not be as appropriate. Any concerns should be discussed with the Den Leader in advance. Most of our Pack outings and camping trips are very friendly for the entire family.

Do Cub Scouts go camping?

Yes. As a Pack, we go "family camping", which means a Parent or the entire family is present. Many of our families are first time campers when they join Scouts. If you don't own a tent, don't worry! We can usually find a "loaner".  Webelos Scouts are able to attend campouts that prepare them for entering the Boy Scout program, with slightly different restrictions than Cub Scouting.

What do you DO in Cub Scouts?

We schedule a variety of fun and exciting activities to keep our Scouts active and happy. Examples of some of our events include:
  • Raingutter Regatta
  • Campouts (i.e. Battleship Cove, New York Hall of Science)
  • Fishing Trips
  • Nature Hikes
  • Baseball Games (Long Island Ducks)
  • Pinewood Derby
  • Blue & Gold Banquet
  • Participation in local parades
  • Placing flags at Calverton Cemetery for Memorial Day
  • Council & District Events - Suffolk County Camporee
  • Service Projects
