Organization

Den is a group of 6-8 Cub Scouts who are all in the same school grade level.  Each Den has at least 1 adult leader, a Den Leader, who supervises and plans Den activities.  Dens meet twice per month with one outing per month.  Outings are based on Achievement requirements found in the Scout Handbook.  Sample outings might include hikes, fire station tour, television station tour, outdoor walks, baking cookies at a den member's house, or visiting the library.  The schedule and location of meetings is determined by the den members.  Dens are organized according to grade level:
  • Lions: Kindergarten
  • Tigers: First Grade
  • Wolves: Second Grade
  • Bears: Third Grade
  • Webelos: Fourth and Fifth Grade
Taken all together, these Dens form a Pack. The Pack meets once per month and is a great time for boys of all ages to interact with each other, play games, and do crafts.  The Pack is lead by the Cubmaster.  Several times a year the Pack participates in outings including campouts, service projects, parades, etc.

The monthly Pack Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday in the MP room at Thomas Kelly School, Carmichael.

Advancement

Ranks

All Cub Scouts start off with the Bobcat Award. This can be done in a couple of days at home with an adult/parent or with the Den Leader. To earn this rank your Scout must fulfill 8 requirements, which mainly consist of learning and memorizing the Cub Scout motto, promise, law, handshake, salute, and sign.

Regardless of what grade a Scout joins the program they will always start with the Bobcat rank and grow from there.

Signing Off

In your Scouts handbook, there are a lot of fun things he/she can do. At the bottom of each is a space for "Akela's OK," which is CubScoutese for "adult or leader signature." After your Scout has completed something to the best of his ability, you or the Den Leader may sign to show that he/she has finished. Be sure to remind your Scout to show this signature to the Den Leader so the achievement can be record it the Den records as well.

Family Scouting

Our Pack program includes the opportunity for families to sign up sons and daughters for Cub Scouting.  Regardless of gender, all Scouts use the same curriculum and activities. This offers families an additional choice in meeting the character development needs of all their children and a unique approach that allows Cub Scouting to meet the needs of today’s families.
