About Troop 284
First and foremost for the scouts, Scouting is about having fun. While our troop's objective is to develop leaders, we provide it in a way that is fun to the scouts. New skills, trips, experiences, games and lifelong friends are all part of the fun. If the meetings, campouts, trips, etc. are fun, the scouts will continue to participate and the learning, development and leadership skills will follow.
Started in September of 1967, sponsored by the Susan E. Wiley PTA, Troop 284 was a break away from Troop 26. The first Scoutmaster was William Kastner, the Senior Patrol leader was Michael Nyberg, who later became the Troops’ first Eagle Scout. The troop meetings were on Monday nights in the Susan E Wiley Elementary School gymnasium, then switching to Thursday nights in the cafeteria. Where they remained until the Troop was forced to change locations and sponsors in 2001. The Copiague Kiwanis Club stepped up and wholeheartedly accepted the sponsorship. Currently the troop meets at the Copiague Middle School on Great Neck Road on Wednesday nights.
The Troop has a long tradition providing a quality, active and value focused program to the youth of our community. Scouting is Outing. Troop 284 has an outing experience every month. .
